Our SUMMER SHOW is fast approaching. Here are the details and deadlines:

Title: "Where does it hurt?"

$15 Fee postmarked: June 8th

The title is just a title, although feel free to use it as your theme if you are so inspired.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT MEETINGS
A brief recap of last week's meeting:
Thanks to David Briley for visiting with us, talking about his vision for the arts in Nashville, and answering questions from artists. Also, thank you to the 20+ artists who attended the meeting. Some of the topics included: live/work space; support of local businesses; arts & education; bicycle transportation; public art; cultivation, promotion and support of local artists.

This week we will talk about the summer show and the GLOW show, our annual fundraiser, coming up in July. The GLOW committee is currently recruiting volunteers. Wednesday meeting: Art in Politics

Hello Everyone,

At this week’s meeting (Wednesday, May 23 at 7:30pm at Kazu in Cummins Station), Metro Councilman and Mayoral Candidate David Briley will join us to talk about his vision for the arts in Nashville. Nashville artists: this is your chance to ask questions about the state of the arts in Nashville. Please attend this important meeting. Bring a friend! (or 2 or 3 or 10)

At last week’s meeting we encouraged you to submit to the Metro Nashville Arts Commission Registry, handed out registration forms, and reviewed the process for registration. Here is the link again to get started:

Also, at last week’s meeting we played with air dry clay during our Untitled 15 Minute Art-Fix. Thanks to Jodi for bringing the big bucket o’ clay!

AND, several people announced opportunities for local artists. Included in these opportunities:

1. Lance DuPre will be opening a new furniture store on 8^th Avenue just north of Broadway. He is looking for local original art to feature in this upcoming store. He is also looking for a mural/sign painter to paint a sign on the building. Email us for contact info.

2. Mar announced a new opportunity to show work in an alternative space – a very cool coffeehouse & gallery in downtown.

3. Invitation to participate in a very special show to benefit a very worthy cause.
70% of sales will go to the artist and 30% to Pleases organization.
One art work per artist.  Please provide your own easel for larger pieces.  
There is very little space to hang work on walls. One night only show.
All you have to do is email that you would like to participate, bring your art work
and easel to the location on Friday, June 1st between 3-5:30, come to the
meet and greet and help sell your work from 6-9:30, take your work home
(if it doesn't sell) by 10pm.  Art should represent positive and strong women.

Untitled artists group of Nashville invites artists in all media to participate in our summer show, WHERE DOES IT HURT? to be held on Friday, June 15, 2007 at the Essence Room, 1511 Jefferson Street.

Each artist may submit one piece. There is no size limit, and the work may or may not reflect the title of the show. Untitled shows are unjuried, uncensored, and open to all artists.

Showing your art with Untitled is easy. All it takes is these very simple steps:

1. PAY One week before the show, mail a check or money order for $15, payable to Untitled to the following address (or just bring it to a meeting):

2. REGISTER No later than midnight on the Sunday before the show, visit www.untitlednashville.org and use the online form to send in the title, dimensions and price of your piece. Each artist or collaboration team may submit one piece. It can be any size, any medium, and any price.

3. DROP OFF The Wednesday before the show, bring your piece to the designated drop-off point between 6:00 and 8:00 PM. Sign in to make sure we know we have your work.

4. GET PAID If your art sells, pick up your money. Untitled charges no commission, and if the buyer pays by check or cash, you can pick it up the night of the show. If the buyer uses a credit card, there will bea 3% credit card fee (which goes to the credit card company, not Untitled), and you can pick up a check at the next Untitled meeting. You'll need to arrange for your buyer to pick up your work at the end of the night, or you can arrange to deliver it, if you prefer.

5. PICK-UP On the night of the show, if your piece does not sell, you must take it down and take it home with you at 10:00 PM. Untitled is not responsible for work left at the venue.

That's it! No jury, no pressure, no commission. Just bring your stuff and we'll hang it up.

Workshop Report

On Wednesday, April 18, Laura Chenicek taught our Spring Workshop on stretching canvas. We also had our first ever art materials swap. If you have art materials you don't need, you can bring them to an Untitled meeting to see if there are any takers, or consider donating them to the Plowhaus for their upcoming kids art project. ALSO, don't forget that this Wednesday is our first ever ART SUPPLY SWAP. Bring that green paint you'll never use, that box of purple nitrile gloves, that giant sketch pad you keep tripping over even though you pledged 8 months ago to only draw on the insides of Cheerios boxes from now on. Bring the crayons, the colored pencils, the printmaking tools you bought before you realized you are not a printmaker. A clean studio is a productive studio -- clear out that stuff you're not using. Folks who bring something to swap get first choice of stuff other folks brought. If there's anything left over, we'll donate it to a school art program. The swap will be after the workshop.

Art Tonight and Future Plans

This is a last minute reminder about tonight's FirstSaturday Gallery Crawl. There are openings tonight all over Nashville, so bundle up a bit and go out to see some art. The Arts Company has a handy map on their site to help you find all the galleries: http://www.theartscompany.com/map. While you're out there, we have some challenges for you:

1) ARTGO is the creation of Alesandra Bellos and Rick Bradley, and tonight is the perfect night to play. If you came to last week's meeting, you have a card. If you didn't, you can print one, or make your own here: http://www.rickbradley.com/bingo/art It's like bingo plus a scavenger hunt. Bring your winning (or not) cards next Wednesday. Maybe we'll make up a few more squares for next time.

2) Art Review Haiku: Tonight's openings will provide opportunities to see all kinds of art. Between now and next Wednesday, distill your impressions into an elegant, 17 syllable poem. Or two. Haiku is a Japanese literary form with a complex and rich history. For our purposes we'll use a very simple definition: first line 5 syllables, second line 7 syllables, third line 5 syllables. On Wednesday, April 11, we'll compare ARTGO cards, share Art Review Haiku and BRAINSTORM TITLES FOR OUR SUMMER SHOW. The show is on June 15, in case you've got your calendar handy, and it will be at the Essence Room on Jefferson Street.

Untitled meetings are are a place for artists to meet, talk, share ideas, and learn from each other. Everyone is always welcome. Here's our plan for the next few weeks:

April 18 - Spring Workshop: Learn to stretch your own canvas with Laura Chenicek. Also, bring un-needed art supplies for our first official Materials Swap.

April 25 - Summer show title announced AND Art Swap. Bring something small you made to trade. Maybe use something you got in last week's swap?

May 2 - You've been asking, so now we're having it: Untitled Friendly Feedback Day! If you'd like your fellow artists' input on something you've been working on, bring it in. This is our chance to get some advice, encouragement and suggestions in a safe and supportive environment.

May 9 - Summer Show Poster Contest and Show Leader Elections

May 16 - Summer show planning and Occasional, Optional 15-minute Art Fix: May Clay. We'll bring the clay, you bring your hands.

No meeting tonight -- drop-off instead

Hello Everyone,

This is just a reminder that there will NOT be a regular Untitled meeting at Kazu tonight, as tonight is the art drop-off for Friday's show. Of course if folks who aren't in the show want to head to Kazu for a chat, please do! Kaz is always glad to see artists, and maybe y'all can get a head start on planning the next big thing. Or come out to the mall and hang out. Next week, we'll be back at Kazu like clockwork.

If you didn't register for this show, we'd love to have you in the Summer Show coming up on June 15.

The drop-off is at Bellevue Mall, around the back near Sears. Please bring your work between 6:00 PM and 7:30 PM. Don't forget to bring a bottle of wine or soda or some snacks for Friday's reception. And bring your artists statement, too, if you'd like it to be included in the book.

Finally (for now), congratulations to the whole art community for making the Nashville Arts Summit last Saturday a success. If you didn't get a chance to share your ideas, or if you couldn't come, or if you did get to talk and have more to say, it would be great if you'd share your thoughts on art-talk. On Saturday night, it's The Big Art Show in Murfreesboro at 6:00 PM at Espresso Joes. This is a traveling show that will also feature local artists, including Untitled folks. It's a similar concept to Untitled, except they bring bands and somehow manage to to hang art shows, have art shows, and take them down all in a single day. Mad props to The Big Art Show for that. If you'd like to participate in this show, follow that link and enter your information before midnight on Sunday, March 11th. Interested artists are strongly encouraged to attend our regular Wednesday night meeting at 7:30 PM at Kazu in Cummins Station this week or next.

The rules are the same as always:

- $15 fee is due (postmarked) one week before the show, March 9th. Send it to PO BOX 40232, Nashville, TN 37204

- one piece per artist. No diptychs, triptychs or multiples unless they are physically attached to each other so that they can be hung by one nail and sell as one piece. No exceptions.

- Work is due on Wednesday, March 14th between 6 and 7:30 pm at the venue. Late work cannot be accepted.

If you need to change your submitted artwork (or price, or title or volunteer preferences, name, address, etc.) just return to the survey before the deadline and enter the new information. You may NOT change your information after March 11.

Untitled is just a bunch of artists making shows happen together. Please be kind to each other by helping out as much as you can and meeting every deadline and following every rule.

What's another word for meeting?

Hello Everyone:

Please join us Wednesday night at 7:30 (that would be today, unless you're up late Tuesday) for Untitled's weekly . . . let's think of a new word .. . . "meeting" sounds so, I don't know, corporate? Meetingish? Un-fun?

What do you call it when a bunch of artists of all ages and persuasions, some of whom know each other, some of whom don't, get together and drink their favorite beverages served by cute and efficient staff and talk about art and share information about opportunities and plan fun events and sometimes make stuff? Whatever you call it, that's what we'll be doing Wednesday night from 7:30 to 8:30 at Kazu in Cummins Station.

News, with drawings

Hello Everyone:

At last night's meeting we learned two things:

1) If we don't send a meeting reminder, fewer people come to the meeting.
2) If you provide paper and sharpies, even photographers will draw.

We didn't MEAN to not send a reminder, it's just all this new technology. Oh! and also we learned:

3) Kazu serves an excellent brownie with icecream and blackberries (thanks for sharing, Shelly!)

After a very brief discussion of the upcoming Spring show, we held the
inaugural episode of the Untitled 15-Minute Art Fix, an optional, occasional addition to Untitled meetings in which we spend 900 seconds actually making art instead of just talking about it. It was fun and relatively painless. Look! Drawings! -->

And also we have this new flickr group at http://www.flickr.com/groups/untitlednashville/. If you have pictures from past Untitled shows you'd like to share, please add them to the group. If you use flickr and would like to help us make our flickr group fabulous (right now we'd settle for respectably functional -- there were pictures there yesterday), we'd love to hear from you. Please email info@untitlednashville.org or post your ideas on the flickr group discussion.

NEXT week (that would be Wednesday, February 14), will be our spring show poster contest. Designers, bring your posters! Valentines Day is overrated anyway. Of course you're welcome to bring your sweetie (maybe s/he'd like one of those brownies), and we'll do our best to keep it short for those of you with big plans.

Next week is also the time to start thinking about how you'd like to be involved with the show. Perhaps you'd like to lend your talents in one of the following exciting areas:

Hello Everyone:

Untitled meets at 7:30 Wednesday at Kazu in Cummins Station. This week will be a quick one, business-wise. We'll answer questions about next week's poster design contest (see previous entry), and review the process for participating in Untitled's spring show 2007: SWEET SIXTEEN coming up on March 16.

Spring show: SWEET SIXTEEN on March 16

Hello Everyone:

Well, it’s official. The votes are in, and Untitled’s Spring show, in our 16^th year, on March 16^th will be called “Sweet 16”. Do with it what you will. And if you like designing things, we do hope you will design one for this show. You’ve got 11 days. Please bring your design to the Untitled meeting on Wednesday, February 14 at 7:30 PM at Kazu. Feel free to bring your sweetheart, and we’ll vote at the beginning in case you’ve got big plans.

Here’s what your poster needs to include:

sweet 16 [sweet sixteen is fine too]
the untitled logo – undistorted and at least 3 inches long
the metro nashville arts commission logo [1-3 inches long]
friday march 16
6-10 pm
free
one-night-only
uncensored art for unlimited audiences
[space for venue name and address]

You can put these in whatever order, font and configuration you like. Posters can be full color or not, up to 11x17”.

What's it gonna be?

Untitled's next meeting is Wednesday, January 31 at 7:30 PM at Kazu in Cummins Station. At this week's meeting we'll share results of the spring show title survey, review the show calendar, welcome new members (all you gotta do is show up, and presto! welcome!), and talk about what's going on art-wise this weekend.

Saturday, February 3 is this month's "first Saturday", which means that you can gorge yourself on openings all evening, and take advantage of the downtown shuttle to get you from one gallery to the next. Come out and see your friends, look at art, think about art, buy art, talk about art and start deciding which of the many galleries in town will make a good home for YOUR art.
